Does Your Name Matter: Is it important ?
Or maybe you haven’t really thought about it much ? When People use our name or not ... Names. The letters that form our name. How many “names” do you have or have you had ? I personally in my 57 years of life have been “given” at least 8 “names”. Strange. Or maybe not so …… Gurjinder,Gudge,Ginny,Gin,Kitty,Kit,Kittu,Gran …… GK …. Miss Jhita, Mrs Strøm …… The names represent phases of my life ,places, people …..relationships. They reflect to some extent the type of person I was back then ….. I am not the same. So much of my values, behaviours & understanding have evolved … transformed along with my name. I remember …. At college people, teachers, fellow students would find it difficult to say my Indian name so they shortened it to Ginny …. Ummm ….. I allowed it . I thought … well, it sounds a little more “western” so it is better. Maybe it is easier for me to “fit” in with others so that I do not “stand out “ too much ? (The things we think …… & do ….. !!!!) Well …. I wanted to fit in. However, after a while being called “Ginny” just was not sitting right with me at all. I hated it !!! So ……. I decided to write to everyone who knew me by that name and explain to them that actually I love my name that my parents gave me when I was born. That name is Gurjinder & it means “Triumph of the Guru”. “Kaur” means Princess …. I actually think it is a beautiful name … Why would I allow myself to be called “Ginny” ? But I did for many, many years. We learn,we grow & we discover our truth. So now. I absolutely love when I am seen. When people use my name to address me. When people I do not know call out my name it literally lights me up inside …. I love it ! However …… I am not my name.

How do you allow your intention to guide you in your practice?
How do you use your intention, prayer or wish to support you as you move, breathe & try to find stillness? Does it help you to go deeper,to soften, to relax ? To connect to “something deeper within“ …. Your centre ,perhaps ? That beautiful sweet space within …. Where everything is ok. Was it worth setting an intention at the beginning of practice or not ? How do you make the practice your own & use your intention to help you do that ? The practice has to serve you …. That’s why you pay for classes and courses isn’t it ? What is it that you really want from your practice ? Do you know exactly why you are practicing ? How do you want the practice to help you “shift” your energy or your mood ? I am a guide. A teacher …... But I believe that you are too. You know so much. Deep down you really do. I simply remind you about stuff that you already know deep inside. But as a teacher I know that everyone who comes to practice is coming with their own “story” … everyone does not come onto the mat feeling the same. The practice I share is the same for the class of students but how do you make it your own ? This is where you focus on the intention you set at the beginning of class. How are you feeling physically, emotionally & mentaliy? From that self- inquiry and from a place of being honest with yourself you are invited to adjust the practice to suit & serve your needs today. So ,if you’ve had a hard day at work or at home …. You can ease up a little and not go into your deepest shapes/poses …. Back off a little . Why not ? Be gentle with yourself. Be kind. Maybe don’t do so many “vinyasa” between poses etc. Take a childs pose a few more times than usual today … Because you can! It’s ok. If you have more energy & you need to move & sweat a little to shift your mood, then by all means flow a little more. You have the intensity dial on your practice & I like to remind you of that fact. Always. You never have to perform or push. Yes, for sure you will challenge yourself and work intelligently to reach your edge but there is no need ever to force an outcome. This is a self care, self love practice that is neverending. PS: Come try a gentle online practice for FREE & discover how you can make the practice your own. Love & Namaste, Gurjinder x I often wonder if you like bringing your hands into a prayer position at your heart centre or not?
What does “setting an intention, prayer, wish or special word ” at the beginning of your yoga practice mean to you ? Do you actually set an intention when I ask you to at the beginning of class or not ? How does it feel for you when you make that simple, powerful gesture towards your own beautiful heart? What goes on in your head space as you do that ? Is it something you would normally do for yourself or does it only happen in our yoga class ? Does it feel like a loving thing to do or does it feel really awkward & unnatural for you ? I’m curious. Before you set your intention, prayer, wish or special word I ask you to relax in savasana. I invite you to settle & feel the support beneath you. I invite you to notice what’s going on with you right now. To feel the aches, pains & tension but also to notice the spaciousness within your body too. I ask you to notice the emotional gripping and tightness …. Where is that held in your body, mind or heart today? To acknowledge the type of day you’ve had so far. Are you feeling tired, anxious, worried …. Sad,happy ….. Notice the stuff going on in your headspace … the quantity & quality of the thoughts occupying your headspace. I ask you to then notice your breath. Don’t change it … just notice the cool breath in through the nose and the warm breath out through the nose or the mouth. Notice the pattern, the depth, the shape your breath makes inside your beautiful body ….. feel it deep in the lower belly ,wide in the side ribs & high in the upper chest …….. No force. Feel the gentle rise & fall of your breath. And relax. We use all aspects of ourselves, the body, mind & heart as part of our practice. We always start the practice from a place of rest. I ask you to relax your toes. Allow your heels to be heavy & to notice which foot feels more grounded … which heel feels heavier … simply notice. Soften the buttocks and allow the hips to be heavy towards the earth. Does one side feel heavier than the other ….. Simple notice. Feel the broadness of your seat & lower back. Gently slide the shoulder blades down your back & allow the shoulder heads to be heavy towards the earth. Feel the broadness of the upper chest and collar bones as you do that. Sides of the neck long. Soften the eyes & allow them to sink deeper into the eye sockets. Eyelids soft. Back of the head heavy towards the earth. Relax. Separate the lips a little and relax the jaw. Drop your tongue from the roof of your mouth & let the tongue be soft & wide at the bottom of your mouth. Relax. Feel the gentle rise & fall of your breath again & again. No rush . No force. Feel your ears gently lengthening towards the earth. Helping to release tension around the cheeks & temples. Facial muscles completely soft & relaxed. Inhaling the front body beautifully light & spacious …. Pause for a second or two …. Exhale slowly ,back body heavy & wide across your mat. Soften ….. Relax. It is from this place of deep relaxation and turning inwards to what is going on in your body, mind & beautiful heart that you are asked to set your intention. Join me for a complimentary Yoga Class & discover for yourself the art of setting an intention. Then decide if that serves you in any way or not. Does it help you feel more connected to whatever is going on for you in your beautiful life …… or not ? It’s your practice . You get to decide! Love & Namaste, Gurjinder x |
